This lecture provides an introduction to the MA Data and Discourse Studies, focusing on the relationship between language, knowledge and society. We will examine language as data, and trace the historical foundations and key concepts of discourse analysis, including the influential ideas of Michel Foucault. We will explore the understanding of language as a social practice and how it shapes and is shaped by social structures through the lenses of critical linguistics and critical discourse analysis.
We will also consider the interplay between data and knowledge, highlighting the importance of perspectivity, contextualisation and implicit knowledge in discourse analysis. The lecture will show how these factors influence the production and interpretation of discourse in different contexts. Finally, the lecture will cover current developments in discourse studies, with particular emphasis on the application of discourse analysis in philology and the social sciences. Students will also be introduced to corpus approaches to discourse. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive overview of discourse analysis as a powerful tool for the study of language in social contexts.
